Ad Astra is Latin for "to the stars," but there's only one star who matters in this powerful, emotional sci-fi spectacular. Brad Pitt follows the hit Once Upon A Time in Hollywood with a supernova turn as a spaceman on a mission to connect with his father and maybe save the universe along the way.Pitt plays a reluctant astronaut who's sealed himself off from human relationships, as alone and drifting in his marital home as if his tether's been cut during a spacewalk. He's a focused and cool-headed member of a military space force and a veteran of combat over the Arctic, but one thing that shakes his cool exterior is the news his dad might still be alive. The downside is that his missing father, also an astronaut, may have doomed the human race.
The story was all over the place, they tried to make a lot of stuff and never close any of it, the relationship between Roy and his father was never interesting or important or explained besides that he loved his job more than his family. SPACECOM was portrait as a shady comercial corporation that controlled the truth and their people with this weird psychology tests but this was never adressed properly. There were wars in the moon but no one seem to care a lot about it or all the people that die across the movie. The relationship of Roy with his woman was never addressed either until the end.
Ad Astra is a meaningful, well-crafted story that reminds us of the growing gap between real cinematic drama and the low-brow, commercial superhero noise we are inundated with monthly from Hollywood. For me, this was the best of both worlds; I love life-threatening sci-fi action and a really good story. An interesting story about people, technology, and the empty spaces we let fill our lives.
This movie may seem sci-fi, otherworldly or in the distant future but is closer to home than we think. Ad astra is an exploration of manhood and what it is to be human and father son relationships. The movie focuses around the main character, Roy Mc.Bride played by Brad Pitt who follows in the footsteps of his father by becoming a astronaut but must be sent on a mission to find his father,Tommy lee Jones on a spaceship that mysteriously disappeared decades ago but now is more important than ever to uncover the truth of what happened as the fate of humanity is at stake. This mission is an action packed blockbuster.
Brad Pitt delivers a great performance as a man dealing with the absence of his father who has disappeared on a exploration for intelligent live in the far reaches of the solar system . Beautifully filmed it deals with issues of abandonment and loss. Yet still finds ways to entertain us. Tommy Lee Jones needed more screen time as did Donald Sutherland as a security liaison who gives a final clue to Brad Pitts character about what happened during the final stages of the ill fated expedition . I found this movie a bit long but still entertaining without a lot of CDG effects to take away from the heart of the story.
Not great story but acting and visuals keep up for the timeby.Seems same old storyline and nothing differently done.Should be different from the past few attempts. They are great as they seem and simultaneously attempt to make a difference between the first and the most successful.
Movies like this with a worst story line but great visuals should not be highly rated. The high ratings given by cinema apologists are what keeps these talentless directors going, whose only talent is hiring a good special effects team in charge of so many movies. Billions of dollars attached to it is waste of money and effort spent on this movie is all wasted.
Hollywood trash. I have no idea how this movie has such a high rating. The story is just utter nonsense. Inauthentic and unmoving. Apart from lacking any artistic value, it's not even a bit entertaining. Watch if the wanted effect is frequent yawning, and sporadic giggles over the ridiculous scientific goofs.
This movie moves so slowly. Long periods of boredom followed by more boredom. No exciting moments! Nothing to put you on the edge of your seat! Some 'big name' actors in this film but certainly not challenged by the character parts they portrayed. There is so many things wrong in this movie it is impossible to list them. there is some beautiful cinema photography but that does not make a good movie by itself.
The story is interesting, but some parts of it is kind of confusing and leave you with questions. And when I say questions, don't think that this is Interstellar or 2001 Space Odyssey level movie. It's not even close to those classics. The plot starts off by showing what the main character's mission is, what he is going to do, but then they end up doing something else instead.
The visuals are beautiful and the VFX look good but honestly, they could be so much better. Looks like the director intentionally didn't want the movie to be about the visuals but rather about the characters. But the characters are uninteresting and not developed well. It's just disappointing. There is one action scene. A space fight on the moon in lunar buggies. The movie is very boring.

I found this movie a bit long but still entertaining without a lot of CDG effects to take away from the heart of the story where a son finds his fathers presumed madness becomes a true standard of duty to country and data and information finding clues of intelligent life forms in the outer reaches of the known galaxy. Overall I really liked this movie and would recommend it .
